To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018 movie)

Hey there👋! Today, I’ll be doing a movie review on a cute, charming, colourful and heartfelt high school rom-com for the Gen Z folks😊. So, let’s get to it.

Romance-obsessed 16 year-old Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) has no love life of her own, instead writing letters to her crushes that she keeps hidden in a box. She is forced to confront her emotions when private love letters she penned are sent to her past crushes — and to her current one, Josh, who is her older sister’s (Janel Parrish) ex-boyfriend, Josh (Israel Brossart) by her meddling younger sister, Kitty (Anna Cathcart). While dealing with the mayhem that ensues and trying to make Josh jealous, she ends up in a fake relationship with Peter (Noah Centineo), a popular but kind-hearted jock who is also trying to make his ex-girlfriend, Gen, (Emilija Baranac) jealous. It’s not long before the fake relationship leads both to develop real feelings.

The movie, To all the boys I’ve loved before is one of my favorite romcoms and one of the reasons why is because of its simplicity and straightforwardness. It’s just a simple, cute, high school movie. It does not in any way require or include any form of critical thinking. It rather shows the ideal life of a typical high school girl next door in a realistic, unclichèd and simple way. Lara Jean ( Lana Condor)is our typical high school girl next door who is a hopeless romantic and is in a mess as the love letters she’s written to her past and present crushes have been mailed out. This is the major event that leads to the unfolding of other events in the movie.

The importance of family too is another thing in this movie that made me really like it. I really really like the bond between the Covey sisters and even the bond between them and their Dad as their mum is no more. This goes to show that family is most important no matter what.

The characters of this movie? Amazing! The characters of To all the Boys I’ve loved Before play their roles in the movie very well. From Lana Condor, whose screen presence feels very real, her honesty and courage are really commendable too, to Noah Centineo who is surprisingly mellow in his performance and not the stereotypical high school jock that one would expect. Janel Parrish too, plays the role of the Covey’s oldest sister very well, acts very maturely and as the mother figure in the family before she goes off to College in Scotland, Anna Cathcart, who’s the mailman of Lara Jean’s letters acts the role of this ‘seemingly older than her age’ little sister really well. The characters of this movie are very wonderful.

Although, one part of this movie I wasn’t quite comfortable with is how Josh gets treated by Lara Jean into the movie. I feel like, that was kinda harsh. She still goes back to him for friendly consolation anyways..

I also really love the soundtrack of this movie. It’s another thing that makes the movie as nice as it is and contributes to the emotional build up in the movie.. The cinematography here is just okay.

With all these, I’d give To All the boys I’ve loved Before a 4.5 out of 5 star rating and like I said at the beginning, any Gen Z romcom lover should definitely watch this movie because you’ll love it. It runs for about 99minutes, so that’s 99minutes of relaxation and pure enjoyment where you don’t have to think about anything💆, Just sit back and enjoy..
